Life of a Teacher

After doing my two days of taking my mentor teachers classes - grade 6 natural science and Grade 7 Natural science and life orientation. I felt very overwhelmed taking on all the responsibilities as my main focus was grade 7 this year but I had to also teacher grade 6, I felt nervous with doing the class register and teaching all four classes as they were really big classes and I had not gotten to know them a lot especially the grade 6 learners. However, I also enjoyed it as even though it was stressful as all of it was new to me, it showed that I never gave up and I enjoyed being on break duty at the tuck shop, at the field and also doing after school duty, where I had to ensure that all the learners where inside while waiting for their transport.

Am I ready to be a teacher? Well that is a really an important question. When I am in the classroom with the learners I had to teacher as the teachers asked me to take over, I felt ready and scared due to not knowing the learners but I was ready to teach them and to be their teacher even if it was only for the day. I feel that I am ready to become a teacher as these four years have taught me a lot, but that I still have some parts that I need to develop but I know that it will come with experience.

I am Ready to be a teacher

I am concerned about not knowing enough about the topic in the subject that I have to teach, I am concerned that I won’t be able to attend to all the learners needs if I am placed in a school that has a large number of learners. I am also concern with the admin side as I saw how the teachers were always busy and trying to get everything done for when the department was coming to check as I have never experienced doing that. I still need to learn a lot about being a teacher and all their responsibilities such as knowing the content very well in that I am able to answer all the learner’s questions. I still need to learn how to use what the schools want me to use in terms of assessments and how to use their rubrics for projects or speeches and how they expect me to mark. But, I am ready to take my role as a newly quailed teacher and to have my own classroom with my own learners.

I am impressed at how well you identified your strengths and weaknesses. There is no doubt you will be an amazing teacher. It is normal to be nervous but the most important thing is to overcome this, which you did, that to very well.
